Embedded in each story told in Playback Theatre lie truths about the storyteller. These truths draw from all aspects of the teller’s life and, when the ritual and dramatic space are especially effective, deep stories emerge. For a person of color, sharing some truths can be like navigating an obstacle course. How much can I share? How real can I be? Will the performers be able to enact the nuances I am referencing? Am I at risk of being too open? How do I participate as an audience member when what I would like to share I know may not be taken well? In this workshop, we’ll be centering the truths of Black, Indigenous, People of Color.

In the first two days, we’ll share our lived experiences through Playback. Through exercises that are both thought-provoking and fun, we will examine the challenges audiences of color face at Playback performances and develop strategies on how to invite them to participate, determine best practices for the conductor’s interviewing and casting process, and look at ways performers can amplify the important truths shared in the story. On the third day, we will apply the skills by sharing an online performance with an audience of color.

This course is for students who identify as Black, Indigenous or People of Color (BIPOC).
