Hannah Fox, Instructor (with special guests)
Playback Theatre (PT) and Theatre of the Oppressed (TO) are both effective techniques for dismantling social oppression and creating meaningful dialogue. TO, created in Brazil by Augusto Boal in the 1970's, is designed to use theatre and roleplaying to brainstorm solutions for social problems. PT, created in the USA around the same time, allows dialogue and social change to emerge from the telling and listening to personal stories. Used together, they are a dynamic duo, connecting the heart and the head in our activism work. Join Hannah and special TO guests in learning different ways PT & TO can work in tandem when promoting social justice, especially during turbulent times.
Prerequisites: Some previous PT or/and TO experience helpful but not necessary.

Holding Space: Trauma-informed Playback Theatre
Randy Mulder, Instructor (with special guests)
Encountering a traumatic story in our performances today is ever-present. Learning trauma-informed practices shapes the way we engage with the audience, which is key to creating a welcoming and safe environment. This workshop introduces methods for conductors, actors, and musicians on how to receive personal narratives with sensitivity and addresses strategies for translating audience experiences into improvised scenes without reenacting content that may be harmful or overly literal. Emphasis is placed on cultivating trust, understanding the importance of ritual, and ensuring that the storytelling process remains respectful, supportive, and empowering for all involved. Approaches that performers can use to care for themselves when hearing or portraying stories involving trauma will also be highlighted.
Prerequisite: Core Training. Some conducting experience would be useful but not necessary.
